B4: Group C --- Haoing Ye

For the term project of this class, our group chose to do the research about “Day lighting Technologies in Intelligent Building”. Day lighting in a building utilizes available sunlight by manipulating window placement, window fixtures, and room dimensions to maximize natural light in a space.  Using day lighting can minimizes the need for lamps and overhead lights and the energy required to power artificial lighting.  Effective day lighting techniques can also:
  • -          Balance heat gain and loss
  • -          Control glare
  • -          Cut energy costs
  • -          Create a comfortable environment within any building

I am interested in this topic because during my coop experiences, I saw a lot of company point out in their proposal, that maximum the daylight using is their emphasis on design. Therefore, I think how to use daylight and combine it with building design will be a very important topic in the future.
This time we are going to introduce three different day lighting technologies:
  • 1.       Lighting sensors/BAS
  • 2.       Window makeup/varying opacity
  • 3.       Passive day lighting: lighting tube/fiber optic lighting.

Each of our group member is going to choose one of the technology, and do the research based on the case study about how this Technic has been used, what kind of tools is necessary for it, and how many energy it will cost. Besides, we are also going to consider about how to provide the training and maintenance for each technology.

On the other hand, since the biggest reason for us to consider on using the day lighting is to save energy, therefore, at the end of the project, we are going to compare the energy between these three technologies and artificial lighting. Personally, I will do the research based on window makeup/varying opacity. Smart windows are switchable windows which have reversible behavior toward activators. The activators may be environment or electricity. These active glazing, change their characteristics due to driven activators. As smart windows have different types consequently responsive of different needs, optimizing situation for single need is unlikely to coincide with the other environmental conditions.

I think the biggest challenge for this term project is to decide how to narrow down the topic, although in the outline, we have already separate into three major technologies, day lighting is still a very broad topic, each Technic has a lot of different way to use, and sometimes we need to combine different Technic together for one case, in this process, we might find there are more Technic that is outside of those three that we listed.

  1. this is a concept I have also seen prevalent in todays society and building design. With the ability to use computer modeling software it has become increasing simple to simulate outdoor conditions. In the past designers had to rely on azimuth and other tedious calculations. Along with their ability to interpret correct results and convey them to a client.
this topic is something I will also take into consideration in my home design in order to optimize efficiency therefore reducing cost and increasing ROI for the owner.
